Community Through Art

Building community is an important part of life, whether that includes the family you were born to, a group of friends you found through school or work, for a community built within your city or town. Finding people to exist with helps build a sense of belonging, which in turn can improve overall health simply because people don’t feel alone in the world.

Our artists have managed to bottle that sense of warmth and belonging and slip it into their work. This batch of art includes all kinds of relationships and communities, from family to neighbors, from classmates to friends — hopefully you’ll feel like you belong right alongside these images!

Starring Our Favorite Animal Friends

Have you ever noticed how many books feature animals as characters? They're more than just cute to look at, people have been using animals symbolically in storytelling for as long as stories have been told. Animals as main characters can provide blank slates for readers to relate to, but still hold at a distance when handling more complex emotions.

Of course, they're also cute to look at and might feel more inviting or engaging to a younger audience. From children's books to non-fiction, our artists have created so many wonderful animal friends that are sure to delight!

Nature Through Rosie Dore's Eyes

February 11, 2025

Rosie Dore is known for her highly detailed and textural artwork. While studying animation for her Fine Art degree, she found that the visual storytelling aspect captivated her the most, which she now creates through her illustrated worlds. When she’s not creating these gorgeous pieces of art, you could find her re-watching Derry Girls, trying to train herself out of her night owl tendencies, or loving on her fluffy angel of a cat, Big Al.

Rosie does much of her work digitally, though she tries to come at it from a non-digital angle by layering texture, detail, and pencil lines rather than block color and solid linework. Although she’s always loved creating art, she grew up wanting to work with animals. She also believes in the importance of maintaining and strengthening our connections with nature, so it’s unsurprising that her work frequently features animals and plants, like many of the lovely pieces below!

Tasteful Illustrated Recipes For Pet Lovers

Rae Ritchie loves to create sly-looking animal friends and scenes full of magic and curiosity. She was able to tie those two together for these two fun projects with Running Press, Drinking with My Dog and Cocktails with My Cat. Rae's delightfully unique illustrations grace the pages of these two pet lovers' cocktail books and bring life to the recipes within!

Here's a look at some of the furry friends and their humans that were included, from all sorts of backgrounds, and of course, some of the delicious-looking drinks as well.

Today's Harvest: Delights of the Garden

When I was younger, my parents would take me to visit my grandmother more often in the spring and summer. She had a huge garden where she grew my favorite fruits and veggies, and every time I was there she would let me harvest my very own cucumbers. When I was older, I'd help my mother plant flowers. These are just some of my warm memories around gardens, but I'm sure you have some of your own, too.

About one-third of folks globally tend to their own garden, and it's about time to get digging and planting for the season. Today I've harvested some of our artists' tippity-top-bestest springtime gardening pieces, I hope you enjoy this crop!

Art Inspired by the Animal Kingdom

There's a tree outside of my agent, Sebastian's, window and their cats are obsessed with it, they love to sit there and watch the birds flit around. The cats lean into those mighty hunter genes hidden beneath their soft fluff and silly antics, chirping at their outdoor enemy as if they're truly a threat.

Despite just being some silly little guy today, I remember that cats have a long symbolic history that spans centuries & cultures. They're associated with mystery and cunning, and even good luck in some cultures! Birds, too, are greatly symbolic in life and art. They represent freedom, strength, and peace. Owls and ravens symbolize wisdom, and in general birds are a sign of new opportunity.
